Questions from winemakers
What are the new EU wine labelling rules?
Since 8 December 2023, wines produced in the EU must give a list of ingredients and a nutrition declaration, under Regulation (EU) 2021/2117. The energy value and allergens are printed; the full list and table can be online through a QR code.
What must be on a wine label in the EU?
Category, PDO or PGI term where relevant, alcoholic strength, nominal volume, provenance, bottler, lot, allergens, energy value and access to the ingredients and nutrition declaration. See the complete guide.
What must stay printed on the bottle?
Allergens such as “contains sulphites” and the energy value, plus the classic particulars: category, alcohol, volume, provenance, bottler, lot.
What may go behind the QR code?
The list of ingredients and the full nutrition declaration, on a page without marketing and without tracking.
Do I need the word “ingredients” next to the QR code?
Yes. The European Commission clarified in November 2023 that a symbol alone is not enough. Write the word in the language of the country of sale.
Is a new QR code needed for each vintage?
Not if the code points to a page that can be updated. Our e-label pages are updated at each vintage while the printed code stays the same.
Can my e-label be a page on my winery website?
Only if that page has no marketing, no shop link and no tracking. Most winery sites run analytics on every page, so a separate host is usually simpler.
How do I calculate the calories of my wine for the label?
Multiply the alcohol in % vol by 0.789 to get grams per 100 ml, then by 29 kJ (7 kcal). Add residual sugar in g per 100 ml × 17 kJ (4 kcal). Our calculator does it for you.
When must “contains sulphites” appear on a wine label?
When the wine contains more than 10 mg/l of sulphites, expressed as SO₂, which is almost always the case. It must be printed in the language of each country of sale.
Do I have to declare egg or milk used for fining?
Yes, if residues are detectable in the finished wine. The wording is set by Delegated Regulation (EU) 2019/33. Read our article on fining allergens.
What is the minimum font size on a wine label?
An x-height of 1.2 mm for mandatory particulars, 0.9 mm if the largest surface is under 80 cm². See the size guide.
Do the new rules apply to my older vintages?
No. Wines produced before 8 December 2023 can be sold with their old labels until stocks run out.
Do Swiss wines need an e-label?
Only if they are sold in the EU. Wines sold only in Switzerland are not required to follow the EU rules on ingredients and nutrition.
Do I need a different label for each EU country?
Not always. One label can serve several countries if it carries the allergen wording and national mentions of each, and the e-label offers each language.
